International Medieval Tournament

Put a date in your Diary going back 500 years or so!

On Saturday and Sunday, September 29 and 30, battle returns to Claregalway Castle as members of the Irish Full Contact Medieval Combat Team prepare to face opposition from some of the world’s top fighters.

For the fourth year the beautifully restored castle, built by the De Burgos  in the early 1400s, will host the Claregalway Castle Shield, a revival of the medieval foot-combat tournament. Fighters from England, Scotland, the USA and elsewhere, clad from head to toe in steel medieval armour, will be competing in both one-on-one categories and five-on-five team fights. The combat is full-force and not staged or choreographed in any way, and requires an extremely high level of fitness and stamina.

Medieval 'Katie Taylor'

Admission:  Adults 10, Children €5.

Open 11.00am to 6.00pm daily

Speaker: Dr Bernadette Cunningham

'Tower houses and manor houses of the Clanricard Burke lordship, c. 1440–1640'

The 2018 annual de Burgo Lecture   Have you ever wondered about the many stone tower houses or castles along the banks of River Clare in County Galway? Who put them there, and why? What is the story of the people – the Clanricard Burkes – who controlled some of these buildings for centuries? This De Burgo lecture will explore an era of transition from medieval to modern in County Galway as viewed through the lens of the lives, loves, and landed estates of the Burkes of Clanricard, and especially through the evidence of their houses and castles that can still be seen in the County Galway landscape.

Bernadette Cunningham is the author of several books including The World of Geoffrey Keating (Four Courts Press, 2000); The Annals of the Four Masters: Irish history, kingship and society in the early seventeenth century (Four Courts Press, 2010), and Clanricard and Thomond, 1540-1640: provincial politics and society transformed (Four Courts Press, 2012). She is a past president of the Group for the Study of Irish Historic Settlement, and a council member of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland. A native of Corofin, Co. Galway, and a graduate of NUI Galway and University College Dublin, she works as a librarian in Dublin
